Struck during Marcus Aurelius's tenure as Caesar (139-161 CE) under Antoninus Pius, before he became sole emperor. The legend AVRELIVS CAES ANTON AVG PII F identifies him as 'son of Antoninus Pius'. These early issues are scarcer than his later imperial coinage and document the careful succession planning of the Antonine dynasty.
