Historical context

Gordian III ascended at age 13 in 238 CE and ruled until 244, when he died in unclear circumstances during the Parthian campaign. His antoniniani are among the most common third-century radiates, struck at Rome and Antioch. Reverses typically celebrate military virtues (Mars, Virtus) or general Imperial themes (Providentia, Securitas), reflecting the precarious geopolitics of his short reign.
