Historical context
Probus (276-282 CE) was a soldier-emperor of the third-century crisis who restored Roman frontiers in Gaul, Egypt, and the East. His antoniniani were struck across an unusually wide network of mints, with Antiochia issues marked by the XXI exergue notation. The XXI mark indicates the silver-bronze ratio (20:1) of the debased radiate, a piece of monetary transparency unusual for the period.
