Historical context
Julia Mamaea was the mother of Severus Alexander and the de facto regent for the early years of his reign (222-235 CE). Her denarii are among the most prolific of any imperial woman, struck continuously for over a decade. Reverses commonly feature Felicitas, Juno, or Vesta, conveying the Severan ideology of dynastic continuity through maternal virtue.
