Historical context
Julia Maesa was the grandmother of Elagabalus and Severus Alexander, the matriarch behind two emperors of the late Severan dynasty. Her denarii, struck 218-222 CE, are among the more common 'imperial women' issues, paired with reverses celebrating Pudicitia (modesty) or Pietas (filial piety). The Severan women received unprecedented coinage in their own names, reflecting their central political role.
