Historical context

Septimius Severus founded the Severan dynasty after winning the civil wars of 193-197 CE. His denarii, struck across mints from Rome to Laodicea, are among the most prolific Imperial issues. The denarius retained its silver standard under his rule but had begun the slow debasement that would accelerate under his successors.
