Historical context

This denarius was struck under Commodus in 180 CE following the death and consecration (DIVVS) of his father Marcus Aurelius. The CONSECRATIO eagle reverse depicts the apotheosis of the deified emperor, a standard motif on posthumous coinage. Such consecratio issues commemorated the formal divinization (apotheosis) of an emperor by senatorial decree.
