Description

A cast bronze signet ring with integral hoop and multi lobed scalloped bezel, dating to the High to Late Medieval period. The bezel is engraved with a geometric star like device formed by intersecting incised lines that create triangular compartments, some enhanced with dotted punchwork. The entirely geometric composition was designed to produce a clear and recognizable seal impression. The ring retains a brown patina with mineral accretions consistent with age and burial. Such pieces functioned primarily as personal sealing tools while also serving as visible markers of identity.

Historical Context
Geometric signet rings were widely used across medieval Europe, particularly from the 13th to 15th centuries. Unlike earlier figurative seals, many later medieval examples favored bold linear and star based patterns that translated clearly into wax. The radiating triangular compartments and punchwork detailing reflect a design language rooted in order, symmetry, and symbolic protection. Rings of this type were worn by townsmen, merchants, and minor officials, serving both practical administrative functions and as daily worn emblems of personal authority.
