Description

A cast copper alloy signet ring with integral hoop and polygonal flat bezel, dating to the High to Late Medieval period. The bezel bears a moulded four lobed foliate device arranged in cruciform symmetry around a central pellet. The interstices are filled with radiating linear strokes, creating a subtle star like visual effect. The shoulders are decorated in relief, and the ring retains a strong green patina consistent with age and long burial. Rings of this type functioned as personal seals and symbolic ornaments, with foliate and cross based symmetry often associated with protection and Christian identity.

Historical Context
During the later Middle Ages, signet rings were worn across urban and rural Europe by merchants, artisans, clerics, and minor officials. Bold foliate and cruciform designs provided clear impressions in wax while also expressing personal belief and symbolic meaning. The four lobed device reflects a long lived decorative tradition that blends vegetal ornament with Christian cross symmetry. Such rings served both administrative purposes and as daily worn markers of identity and faith within medieval society.
