Description
A Roman bronze ring with a broad hoop and fluted shoulders supporting an oval bezel set with a carnelian intaglio. The engraved gemstone depicts a female bust in profile facing right, shown with stylised hair and wearing a wreath or diadem above draped garments. The intaglio is cut in the classical Roman glyptic tradition and was intended to function as a personal seal when pressed into wax. Rings of this type combined decorative appeal with practical use in everyday administrative life.

Historical Context
Gemstone intaglios were widely used throughout the Roman Empire as personal seals and items of jewellery. Carnelian was especially favored because its hardness allowed detailed engraving while producing clear impressions in wax. Female busts on Roman gems often represented goddesses, imperial women, or personifications associated with virtue, prosperity, or divine protection. Such rings were worn by a broad range of individuals across the empire, serving both as functional sealing tools and as expressions of personal identity and cultural affiliation.
