Description
A Roman bronze ring with a slender hoop expanding into an oval engraved bezel. The bezel depicts a rearing lion in an attacking posture with raised forelegs, an arched body, and a curved tail, rendered in a lively schematic style. Linear strokes beneath the animal likely indicate ground or landscape elements within the composition. The motif is engraved directly into the bronze rather than set with a gemstone, a feature commonly seen in Roman provincial rings intended for everyday wear. The ring retains an ancient patina with surface wear consistent with age.

Historical Context
Animal motifs were widely used in Roman jewellery and personal objects, reflecting cultural admiration for strength and vitality. The lion in particular carried strong symbolic associations with courage, power, and protection. Rings with engraved animal devices were worn across the Roman provinces as personal ornaments and sometimes as symbolic talismans. Such pieces demonstrate how even modest bronze jewellery could carry meaningful imagery rooted in the visual language of the Roman world.
