Description
A cast copper alloy signet ring with an oval raised bezel and gently tapering hoop, dating to the early modern period. The bezel is engraved with a geometric device composed of triangular and wedge shaped elements arranged around a central horizontal line, forming a stylised monogram or merchant’s mark. The shoulders are decorated with symmetrical scrolling foliate ornament rendered in low relief, reflecting decorative styles common during the Renaissance period. The ring retains a dark patinated surface with wear to the engraving consistent with repeated use as a sealing ring.

Historical Context
During the 16th and 17th centuries, personal signet rings remained important tools in commercial and administrative life across Europe. Merchants, craftsmen, and urban professionals commonly used engraved rings to authenticate documents and mark goods in trade networks that were expanding rapidly during the early modern period. Instead of heraldic arms, many rings displayed distinctive geometric merchant marks that functioned as recognizable personal signatures. Decorative foliate shoulders reflect Renaissance aesthetic influences, blending practical sealing function with ornamental design suitable for everyday wear.
