Description

A Roman bronze signet ring from the 2nd–3rd century AD, engraved with a waterfowl—likely a goose or duck—within an octagonal border. A rare and symbolic design linked to vigilance, protection, and devotion.

Description
This bronze ring features a well-defined octagonal bezel engraved with a standing waterfowl, its neck arched and wings stylized in fine linear detail. The motif, sacred to the goddess Juno, symbolized loyalty, fertility, and alertness. The ring’s compact form and clear engraving reflect the work of a skilled provincial artisan. A natural green patina enhances its surface, preserving both elegance and authenticity after centuries of age.

Historical Context
Waterfowl motifs were favored in Roman art and jewelry as symbols of devotion and vigilance—the sacred birds of Juno that famously guarded Rome. In provincial workshops, such imagery also carried broader meanings of fertility, renewal, and protection. Rings of this kind were practical seal rings as well as personal talismans, worn by men and women across the empire as emblems of faithfulness and divine favor.
