Description & Iconography:
The cross’s face is finely engraved with the figure of the Virgin Mary, identified by the Greek abbreviation “MHP ΘY” (“Mother of God”)—a sacred title in Byzantine tradition. Mary stands in the classic orans posture, arms uplifted in prayer, radiating both grace and intercessory power. The halo, stylized drapery, and intricate details all reflect the unique artistry of Byzantine religious metalwork. Such iconography was believed to offer protection and invoke the compassionate presence of the Virgin for the wearer.

Function & Spiritual Significance:
Enkolpia of this type were more than decorative—they were worn around the neck by clergy and lay pilgrims alike, holding within their hollow chambers tiny relics: bone fragments, threads from saints’ garments, or pieces of holy earth. This practice gave the wearer a sense of tangible connection to the divine, especially during times of travel, danger, or prayer. The presence of intact hinges and deep, devotional engraving marks this example as a particularly well-preserved and desirable relic.

Restoration and Authenticity:
Offered in original, untouched condition, with a beautifully aged patina from centuries of reverence and safekeeping. No aggressive cleaning or modern alterations—this enkolpion preserves the authenticity and spirit of its era. An optional restoration service is available for those wishing to reveal more of its original detail while maintaining historical integrity. The pendant is guaranteed authentic and includes a lifetime Certificate of Authenticity.

Historical Context:
Byzantine reliquary crosses are among the most evocative personal religious artifacts to survive from the Middle Ages. This cross would have accompanied its original owner through life’s journeys, serving as both a statement of faith and a protective talisman. Today, it stands as a tangible link to Byzantine spirituality, pilgrimage, and artistry—a museum-worthy piece seldom seen on the market.
