Historical Context
During the 5th–7th centuries AD, as the Roman world transitioned into Byzantium, gold rings with garnet inlays became symbols of rank, piety, and protection. Red stones evoked the blood of Christ and eternal life, while intricate filigree reflected the fusion of imperial luxury with Christian spirituality. Such pieces were worn by high officials and clerical elites across the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly in Constantinople and Antioch—centers renowned for their master goldsmiths and refined artistry.
