Severan Dynasty Coins, Authenticated Silver Denarii AD 193 to 235

For forty-two years, between AD 193 and 235, the Roman Empire was held together by one extended family from the Syrian city of Emesa. Septimius Severus took the throne after a year of civil war. His son Caracalla murdered his brother and was murdered in turn. His grand-nephew Elagabalus was assassinated by the Praetorian Guard. His cousin Severus Alexander was killed by his own soldiers on the Rhine. Behind almost every emperor of that dynasty stood a Severan woman: Julia Domna, Julia Maesa, Julia Soaemias, Julia Mamaea. They appear on the coinage in numbers no Roman women had matched before, and few would match after.

This collection is the surviving silver denarii of that dynasty in Aurora's current stock. Eleven pieces. Three Julia Maesa, five Julia Mamaea, one Septimius Severus, two Severus Alexander. All silver, all struck (not cast), all catalogued against Roman Imperial Coinage, all reviewed by an independent numismatist, all backed by Aurora's written lifetime authenticity guarantee.

Why the Severan dynasty matters to a coin collector

Severan coinage sits at a peculiar moment in the history of Roman money. The silver standard is still high enough to be unambiguously a denarius (roughly 2.5 to 3.5 grams, fineness around 50 to 60 percent under Septimius Severus, declining toward Severus Alexander). The portraiture is still confident, late-classical, with deeply cut hair and full facial modelling. The mint at Rome is producing in volume, and provincial mints at Antioch and Alexandria are issuing for the eastern legions.

What makes Severan coinage particularly collectible, and what drives the unusual gender balance in the surviving record, is the visibility of the dynasty's women. Julia Domna, wife of Septimius Severus, was the first Roman empress to be regularly portrayed on the silver coinage in her own right, with her own reverse types. Her sister Julia Maesa, after Elagabalus reached the throne in 218, became effectively the regent. Julia Mamaea, mother of Severus Alexander, ran the imperial household and the imperial finances for thirteen years. Their portraits and their reverse types (Pudicitia, Felicitas, Venus Genetrix, Juno Conservatrix) make up a meaningful share of the surviving silver from those years.

What to look for in a Severan denarius

Three things separate a collectible Severan denarius from a worn or problematic one. First, the portrait. A well-struck Severan portrait still shows the individual hairstyle of the woman or man portrayed, which on Julia Mamaea means the characteristic waved coiffure with the rolled fringe and the bun at the nape. On Julia Maesa, an earlier, simpler arrangement. On Severus Alexander, the short military cut and the smooth chin of a man crowned at thirteen. A flat, generic portrait is either heavy wear or a poor die.

Second, the legend. A Severan obverse legend will run something like IVLIA MAMAEA AVG or IMP SEV ALEXAND AVG, with the personal name in full and the title abbreviated. The abbreviated Latin titulature on a Severan obverse is more compact than on a Trajanic denarius because the names are longer. Spacing and letterform errors are common in modern forgeries copied from auction-house photographs.

Third, the patina and edge profile. Severan denarii were struck on rolled flans, not cast. The edge should show the characteristic compression and very slight irregularity of hand-struck coinage. Patina, where present, should follow the relief in three dimensions and be adherent under loupe examination. A patina that sits on top of the surface, or that wipes away to bright metal, is a warning sign. The full check is in our guide on the seven authentication markers we apply to every Severan coin.

Why buy a Severan denarius from Aurora rather than a marketplace

Two reasons. The first is the work that has already been done before the coin reaches the listing page: seven antiquarian markers, RIC reference confirmed, OCRE cross-reference where applicable, independent numismatist sign-off on file, provenance line published where we have it. The second is the lifetime authenticity guarantee, in writing, with no expiry. If a Severan denarius bought from Aurora is ever shown to be inauthentic, we refund it. Forever.

The alternatives, in descending order of guarantee, are a specialist auction (high quality, high cost, buyer's premium on top, no after-sale guarantee), an established dealer (variable quality control, variable guarantee terms), and an unvetted marketplace listing (no guarantee at all, authentication burden transferred to the buyer). Aurora's price reflects the work that has already been done so you do not have to commission it yourself.

All eleven Severan coins in this collection are fully legal to own under EU law and to ship worldwide.
